Lap Times Explained

Each column represents a vehicle driven on different racing lines. For example, the first row of the first column is the time for the Miata driven on its own line. The second row represents the Miata driven on the Porsche's racing line, and so on. It is expected that when a vehicle is driven on its own line (large font) the lap time will be the quickest. Otherwise, Al has not done his job very well.

The Racing Line at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course - Pro Circuit

Mid-Ohio is an old school circuit that plays host to some big events, including AMA and IndyCar. It's also home to the Mid-Ohio School. The 2.4 mile course is a lot of fun (I speak from experience in this case), with several tough corners and sequences and a couple crazy elevation changes. The Pro Circuit, used for most competitive four-wheel events, has no Chicane section between Turn 1 and the Keyhole. See the entry for the Club Circuit for a more detailed analysis.

Since the Pro Circuit does not utilize the Chicane, your approach to the Keyhole is much different. The braking section is uphill and can be taken very late. Al has everybody coming in for two apexes, but a lot of drivers stay wider than that during entry. Get on the throttle early to make your drive out onto the back straight.

2012 NASA Spec Miata Championships

Founder's Notes

I started you out right before the driver bumps the car in front of him coming out of Turn 1. That driver spins off the course a couple minutes later..this is actually a pretty entertaining video! It's possible this driver could save a bit of time by driving out to the apex at 8, and getting farther to the outside when setting up for 9. Al seems to think so, anyway. Also at issue is the wide entry into Turn 2. It isn't faster, I promise.

Mustang GT 5.0 - NASA Championships 2012 4th Place Run - Shaun Day

Founder's Notes

Shaun Day lays down another fast lap at Mid Ohio (see his other video at the Club Circuit).

Josh Hurley Highlights and Commentary APR VW Gti

Founder's Notes

High five to Josh for being all over the Race Optimal line! See that? No wide entry for Turn 2, and a tight line through the Carousel. Some nice racing insights in this video as well.

Randy Mueller NASA Nationals 2011 Record Lap in BMW E46

Founder's Notes

This video is taken from Scott Good's witeup, linked in the Additional Resources section. Man, Randy is tearin' in up in this record breaking lap! He's also right on top of the recommended line for most of the course, particularly with respect to exiting Turn 4, and the 7-8-9 section. Unlike Al, he stays out wide at the Keyhole, but if both lines are taken optimally, the difference will only be hundredths. Randy also gets out a little far exiting Turn 5, but if you keep watching he stays farther to the left in the second lap. This video is also a great demonstration of the fast, tight line through the Carousel. Nice job, Randy!

2010 Skip Barber Regional - Jesus Rios

Founder's Notes

I really like this ride form Jesus Rios. There's some entertaining action with a couple other cars as well. The way this guy carries speed through the corners, particularly at Turns 1 and 9, is sick.

Brian Till Laps in Daytona Prototype

Founder's Notes

Ok, let's crank things up a notch. A little wide going into Turn 2 and the carousel , like many drivers. Brian also lifts off quite a bit at 8, which may or may not be necessary.
